SQL PASS Summit 2018 – 05-09 November 2018 in Seattle

The Summit is returning to Seattle for 2018.  The pre-conference sessions are set and registration is open. These usually fill-up quickly, so act soon to avoid disappointment.  Some of the regular conference sessions have been selected and more are on the way.  Check back to see new sessions as they are added.

You can save $150 off the registration fee by using this code: LSDISC9YE

Tip: If you get the All-in-one-bundle, you’ll not only get both pre-cons, but also get a (nice) PASS  backpack and water bottle.

Speaking of PASS, the 24 Hours of PASS - 2018 Summit Preview is taking place on 12 June, starting at 7:00 am CDT.  This is a great way to help identify sessions to focus on at the Summit.  And it’s free, of course.

Check out the GroupBy site.

This is a free community-based training event with the next sessions scheduled for 01 June, 2018. Organized by Brent Ozar, the SQL Server community (you) determines the content – thanks, Brent!  Review, rate, submit an abstract at the GroupBy site.

PASS Virtual Groups: Over two dozen (free) virtual groups, focusing on different areas of SQL Server, PowerShell, PowerBI and more.  Go to http://www.pass.org/ and click on the Community tab where you’ll find the Virtual Groups link.

Don’t forget about Microsoft Virtual Academy.  Lots of free training on SQL Server, PowerShell, Azure – you name it, it’s probably there.

Exploring Why UDFs and Nested Views Hinder the Query Optimizer

Present by: Andy Yun (SentryOne.com)

Ever found yourself deconstructing endless layers of nested code?

Is your T-SQL codebase written in an object-oriented format with functions & views?

Did you know that object-oriented code reuse can significantly hinder the Query Optimizer?

In this session, learn how T-SQL is not like other common programming languages.

We will deep dive inside the Query Optimizer to understand why applying object-oriented

principles can be detrimental to your T-SQL's performance. Extensive demos will not only

explore solutions to maximize performance, you will also be introduced to a T-SQL tool

that will aid you in unraveling nested code.

Andy Yun (SentryOne.com)

Andy Yun is a SentryOne Senior Solutions Engineer and a Microsoft MVP. He has been working

with SQL Server for over 15 years as both a Database Developer and Administrator. Leveraging

knowledge of SQL Server Internals and extensive experience in highly transactional environments,

he strives to make T-SQL leaner and meaner. Andy is extremely passionate about passing knowledge

onto others, regularly speaking at User Groups, SQL Saturdays, and PASS Summit. Andy is a

co-founder of the Chicago SQL Association, co-Chapter Leader of the Chicago Suburban User Group,

and part of the Chicago SQL Saturday Organizing Committee.
